“Folding–Unfolding”
Body-Mind Centering® Workshop in Dali, China

In this workshop we explore early developmental movement patterns that support movement and dance. We trace aspects of the journey from one-celled organisms to walking beings, different stages of movement, relation, and presence that we passed through and are underlying our activities today. As multicellular beings we were growing in a fluid environment. Through spiraling, folding and unfolding, yielding and resistance, breathing and pulsing, our bodies and movements emerge. As development is not linear it continues to inform us throughout our lives. In our movement these early movement patterns support modulation of tone, adaptability, stability, lightness, and ease.

Embryological development is layered throughout the workshop, alongside explorations of our relationship to the space in and around us. The support of bones, fluids, connective tissues, and organs offer pathways toward greater ease and efficiency in movement. The inner support of a soft, responsive spine and the dynamic relationship between core and periphery weave through the five days and help us in meeting our ourselves and our environment. We explore movement that offers a wider range in our skills of dancing and improvising: rolling, crawling, balancing, weight bearing, pushing, pulling, reaching, falling, bonding, and trusting both earth and space.
